With the global economic crisis making life tougher for everyone, the City of Columbus has failed to assist the Somali community in combating the problems the crisis brings.

Driving Under Suspension

Did you know that driving under suspension is a misdemeanor offense that carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine? The penalty for DUS can go from bad to worse if the driver has no automobile insurance.

The driver then risks eligibility for limited driving privileges, which at the very least allows for travel back and forth to work. But once cited for driving without insurance on two or more occasions, and that driver may loose the ability to secure even limited driving.

Ignoring these issues typically results in bigger problems, including increased legal fees and insurance rates, additional reinstatement fees to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and higher court costs and fines. The better course of action is to directly confront each item that contributes to the suspension.

The BMV provides this information. It is also available online; just have your driver’s license number available. Google “Ohio bureau motor vehicles” and follow the prompts under the BMV website as it relates to online services.
Also, seek driving privileges and a monthly payment plan for the reinstatement fee as soon as possible. In the long run, this path is the most expedient route.
