East African Refugee Program Halted: The suspension affects refugees in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Guinea and Ghana. Although the refugee program has been halted, it is still wise to file an Affidavit of Relationship (AOR) with one of Columbus’ two resettlement agencies, in case the refugee program begins again in the future. Another option for U.S. citizens and Legal Permanent Residents is to bring family members to the U.S. as immigrants, by filing an I-130, Petition for Alien Relative. The I-130 immigrant process and refugee process do not interfere in any way with one another. In fact, it is recommended that both processes be completed to increase the chances of bringing family members to the U.S. The filing and approval of an I-130 is the first step in helping a relative immigrate to the U.S. If you are a U.S. citizen, you may file an I-130 for your spouse, your parents, your children, and your siblings. If you are a Permanent Resident (have a green card), I-130s can be filed for your spouse and unmarried children. Once the I-130 has been filed, your relatives will be put in line for a visa number, and will be eligible to come to the U.S. once their visa number becomes available. This period of time varies depending on your status and the family relationship of the person. Some family members of U.S. citizens have no waiting period except for the length of time it takes to process the documents, which can be less than one year. The ECDI Immigration Department can help U.S. citizens and Legal Permanent Residents file I-130 applications for their family members outside the U.S. The ECDI Immigration Department is located at Banadir International Mall, 3248 Cleveland Ave., 2nd Floor, Rm. 4, Columbus, Ohio 43224 and 3043 West Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43204. Inna Simakovsky, Immigration Attorney, can be contacted at 614-599-0819 or Burhan Ahmed, ECDI’s outreach coordinator can be contacted at 614-804-2925. |
