Profile - Steve Stivers & Mary Jo Kilroy

Senator Steve Stivers oo u sharaxan Jagada Congresska Maraykanka Steve Stivers wuxuu sheegay in guulaysigiisa jagada Sanatarniada Ohio ay sababtay hanaankiisa shaqo wanaag sida: dhegaysashada dadka kale iyo in uu awood u leeyahay in uu la shaqeeyo labada xisbi, Dimuqraadi iyo kan Jamhuuriga ahba, si loo xaliyo dhibaatooyinka haysta dadka deggan gobolka Ohi. Wuxuu doonayaa in uu wax u qaban doono sida uu haddeer u hayo haddii loo doorto jagada Congress ka ee uu u baratamayo.
Stivers, wuxuu soo qaatay oo tilmaamo saddex ah ka bixiyay sidii habsamida ahayd ee uu dhegaha ugu jalaq siiyay waxyaabihii shicibku danaynayay, isaga oo la kaashaday axsaabta kale si loo soo qabto waxa shicibku danaynayaan:

Wuxuu la kaashaday Senator Ray Miller oo ah Dumuqraadi sidii loo siin lahaa daryeel caafimaad dadka curyaan ka ah ee shaqeeya.  Wuxuu la kaashaday Attorney Rick Pfeiffer sidii loo dayac-tiri lahaa ama loo bur-burin lahaa guryo badan oo ku yaala meelo badan oo magaalada Columbus ah oo dadkii lahaa ka qaxeen
.
“Waxaanu nasiib u yeelanay in dad badan oo Soomaali iyo Afrikaan ahi ay inala joogaan bartamaha Ohio,” Sidaa waxaa yiri Senatar Stivers mar uu la hadlayay jariidada Somali Link.
“Waxaanu u baahanahay in aannu ka qayb qaadano soo dhawayna dadkan iyo sidii aanu uga caawin lahayn sidii ay uga hortagi lahaayeen caqabadaha hortaagan sida luuqada, dhaqanka iyo dhaqaalahaba.”

“Taasina waa sababta aan u taageerayo abuurida la abuurayo African Immigrants Commission, waayo waxaan aqoonsanahay baahida loo qabo u adeegida qaxootiga Afrikaanka ah eek u nool gobolkan Ohio.”

Stivers wuxuu kaloo carabka ku dhuftay dhiirigalinta uu bangiyada ku boorinayo sidii ay xal ugu heli lahaayeen dhibaatada soo wajahday xawaaladaha Soomaalida iyo sidii aysan u dhici lahayn in la hakasho galiyo lacagaha ay u dirayaan qaraabadooda joogta Afrika.
“Lacagaha la dirayaa waa lacago lagu caawinayo qoysaskii iyo dadkii Soomalida ahaa ee uu waxyeeleeyay dagaalku ee jooga wadankii ama ku sugan xeryaha qaxootiga ah ee jaarka la ah Soomaaliya.” Waa taakulayn aysan dowlada lacagi kaga baxayn oo bilaash ah.

Sidoo kale Senator Stivers wuxuu sheegay in uu isku dayi doono in uu wax ka qabto sidii dadka qaxootiga ah loogu fududayn lahaa in ay la midoobaan qoysaskooda, taasoo macnaheedu yahay in uu isku dayayo in Soomaalida halkan joogta loo keeno qaraabadooda joogta dalkii.

Waxa ugu horeeya ee uu Stivers yiri waan qabanayaa haddii la ii doorto jagadaas waa isku day aan isku dayayo in aan meel isugu keeno axsaabta labada xisbi ee ka Dumuqraadiga ah iyo kan Jamhuuriga ahba, si ay u yeeshaan wada shaqayn iyo iskuduubniba.

Stivers waxaa codkooda ku taageeray ha’yadahan soo socda: U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Businesses, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, Fraternal Order of Police, Ohio Society of CPAs, Ohio State Medical Association, National Vietnam & Gulf War Veterans Coalition, and the National Association of Wholesale Distributors.
Stivers Will Listen, Then Work With Both Parties to Solve Problems Steve Stivers says his success in the Ohio Senate is because of the way he works: he listens to other people, then he collaborates with both political parties, Democrats and Republicans, to solve problems. He wants to do the same thing if he is elected to Congress. Stivers gave three examples from the past year where he listened to peoples’ concerns, then worked with others to address the issues:
He collaborated with Democratic State Senator Ray Miller to allow disabled persons who are employed to retain Medicaid coverage by paying a premium for that health insurance.
He worked with Democratic State Representative Joyce Beatty to help fight cancer.
And he worked with Columbus City Attorney Rick Pfeiffer, a Democrat, to get run-down vacant houses repaired or demolished.

“A lot of people talk about working with both Democrats and Republicans,” Stivers told Somali Link. “I actually do it.”   “We are lucky to have the Somali and other African populations here in Central Ohio,” Stivers said. “We need to reach out to help them overcome language, cultural and economic barriers.”

“That’s one reason I support creation of the African Immigrants Commission, because I recognize the need to serve African refugees differently.”  Stivers says he has been talking with banking and financial leaders to encourage them to find a way for family members to continue to send small amounts of money to relatives in Africa.

“These are private humanitarian dollars going to desperate family members in war-torn Somalia, or to refugee camps in bordering countries.” “This is aid the government doesn’t have to pay. We have to be smarter about how we do this, so people can still send a few dollars to family members.”

Stivers also sees a need for more rental housing for African refugees, some of whom have large, multi-generational families. He said he will listen and learn more about the housing need, then bring people into the discussion who can make things happen, beginning with the federal government and local leaders in public and private multi-family housing.
Besides better housing, Stivers said he will try to make it easier for families to reunite, which is sometimes difficult when family members enter the U.S. in different cities. Federal money ought to follow the person, and be available to support the reunified family in the community they collectively settle in, Stivers said.

The first thing Stivers said he will do as a new Congressman is to reach out to all the other new members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans. More than one-third of Congress will be new members. “I will try to organize so we can work together, and change the culture of Washington.” Stivers is endorsed by the following organizations: U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Businesses, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, Fraternal Order of Police, Ohio Society of CPAs, Ohio State Medical Association, National Vietnam & Gulf War Veterans Coalition, and the National Association of Wholesale Distributors.

Cordray Says He Will Continue
to Work for Somalis
Richard Cordray believes he has served the Somali people well as Ohio’s State Treasurer during the past several years. If he is elected Ohio Attorney General on November 4, he promises to continue to help solve the problems faced by Somalis and other African immigrants in Ohio. Cordray said he has tried to help in three problem areas that many Somalis experience: helping immigrants collect unclaimed funds, financial literacy education, and working to create an Ohio Commission for African Immigrants.
Unclaimed Funds: Cordray said many immigrants do not know that they are entitled to collect unclaimed funds that rightfully belong to them. Unclaimed funds often are utility company or apartment security deposits owed to people when they move from one home to another. “I made it a point to go to the mosques during call to prayer so I could provide information to members of the Somali community about how they can get unclaimed funds that belong to them,” Cordray told Somali Link. Financial Literacy Education: Cordray also has helped Somalis and other immigrants through financial literacy education. As State Treasurer, Cordray provided funding to provide financial literacy education classes for immigrants, he said. Cordray also personally taught many of the financial literacy classes to Somali immigrants, both young and old.

African Immigrant Commission: For more than a year Cordray has been a strong proponent of creating the proposed Ohio Commission for African Immigrants. Cordray has urged several Ohio lawmakers to introduce a law to create the Commission, which he said “…would provide a center of focus on problems and issues faced by African immigrants, not just Somalis but all African immigrants in Ohio.”

Money Transfers: When asked about the problem African immigrants have in trying to send money to relatives in Africa, Cordray said: “I am not sure how much state government can help with this issue.” He said wanting to send money to relatives in your homeland is no new thing. “Irish, Italian and German immigrants all did the same thing,” Cordray said. “There has to be a way to allow it (money transfers to relatives) without creating other problems.” If he is elected Ohio Attorney General, Cordray pledges to continue to deliver information services to help the African community. “The Ohio Attorney General must set the example, insist on respect for all individuals, and insist on strong protection of the equal rights of all people,” he said. “I look forward to the opportunity to stand up for fair treatment for everyone and protection of their Constitutional rights,” Cordray said.

Kilroy ayaa sheegtay Al-Qaida
ku sugan Soomaaliya
Mar Mary Jo Kilroy wax laga waydiiyay haddii loo doorto jagada Kongareesnimada ee ay u baratamayso waxa ay samayn lahayd ee ay ku taageeri lahayad xawilaaduhu adeegyada ay u qabtaan dadka Soomaalida ah, waxa ay sheegtay in ay arrintaa ka feejignaanayso maxaa yeelay, “Waxaa lawada ogsoon yahay in Alqaacida ay saldhigyo ku leedahay Soomaaliya. Waxaan u baahanahay macluumaad badan oo arrintaas ku wajahan.” Waxaa ay aaminsan tahay in dowlada Maraykanku ay taageerto Qaramada Midoobay iyo ha’yaadka kale ee samafalka si loo caawiyo loona quudiyo ama loo daryeelo dadka tabaalaysan ee Qaramada Midoobay u aragto dhibaatadii ugu waynayd ee soo food saarta dadyowga ku tabaalaysan dunida guudkeeda.
Iyada oo wali Marwo Kilroy ah Komiishinerka degmada Franklin, haddana waxaa ay ka dharagsan tahay baahida loo qabo in dowlada dhexe (federal) iyo tan hoosaba (local) ay lama huraan tahay in ay ka wada shaqeeyaan sidii wax looga qaban lahaa baahida loo qabo barashada luuqada Ingiriiska iyo tan ilmaha lagaga caawinayo leylisyadoodaba. Waxay muujisay in haddii loo doorto jagada Kongareesnimada ee ay u ordayso ay isku dayi doonto sidii wax looga qaban lahaa dhibaatooyinkaas dadka Soomaalida ka haysata qodobadaas kor ku xusan. Maraykanku wuxuu ku caanbaxay soo dhawaynta dadka ka imanaya wadamada kale iyo sidii ay ula qabsan lahaayeen dhaqanka Maraykanka, sidaas waxaa tiri marwo Kilroy.

Mar wax laga waydiiyay arigtada uu ay ka qabto xuquuqda ay dowlada Maraykanku isu siisay in ay dhagasato taleefanada dadku dibada uga soo dirsan asxaabtooda iyo qaraabadooda ku nool wadanka Maraykanka, jawaabteedii waxay noqotay, in sharciga Surveilance Act of 1973 uu u baahan yahay in ay ansixiyaan maxaakiimtu cidii loo adeegsanayo, taasoo macnaheedu yahay in la helo wax cad oo kalifi karay in la helo ogolaansho lagu dhagaysanayo qofka. Sidaa daraadeed si aad ah ayay uga soo horjeedaa waxa xukuumada Bush ay doonayso in ay ku dhagaysato taleefanada dadka.
Waxay intaas ku dartay, in ay sidoo kale taageerto arrimaha lagu taageerayo sidii loo midayn lahaa qoysaska kala daadsan. Waxay carabka ku dhufatay in xitaa qoyskeedu uusan arrintaas bari ka noqon oo ay u baahdeen in la isu keeno kadib markii ay ka soo qaxeen Yurub, sidaa daraadeed waa in ay dadka Soomaaliyeed ay iyaguna helaan mid la mida xuquuqdaas.

Marwo Kilroy, waxaa ay jeceshahay in ay xusuusiso bulshada Soomaalida ah in arrimaha ay u dagaalsantahay hirgalintooda sida kordhinta shaqooyinka iyo hoos u ridida canshuurtu ay tahay mid saamayn weyn ku yeelanaysa dadka Soomaalida qudhooda. Waxay kaloo sheegtay in ay rajaynayso in ay caawiso qoysaska shaqeeya, iyada oo qoysaska Soomaalidu ay yihiin dad isku duuban, waxaa ay damacsan tahay in ay uga shaqayso Washington, sidii ay uga shaqaysay horumarinta waxbarashada ee degmada Franklin-ba.
Kilroy waxaa taageeray ururadan hoos ku qoran: Labor and professional groups that include Ohio AFL-CIO, AFSCME Ohio, and groups representing nurses, teachers, farmers, social workers, letter carriers, bricklayers, painters, carpenters, sheet metal workers, operating engineers and transportation workers.

Waxaa kaloo taageeray the National Organization for Women, Emily’s List, and Planned Parenthood. Other supporters include the Sierra Club, Council for a Livable World, and J-Street PAC.
Mary Jo Kilroy says that it is well known that Al Qaeda is in Somalia When Mary Jo Kilroy was asked what she could do as a Congresswoman to support the money-wiring services used by Somali people, she explained that she would have to be very careful about the issue because, “It is well known that there are Al Qaeda cells operating in Somalia. I would have to be cognizant of the issues,” she went on to say. “I would have to learn more.”
She thought that the United States should support the United Nations and other non-profit organizations to help feed and care for people suffering through what the United Nations has called the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.

As Franklin County Commissioner, Ms. Kilroy knows a good deal about local English as a Second Language (ESL) and after school programs and is alert to ways the federal and local governments can work together to support programs essential to recent immigrants.
She stressed the fact that as Congresswoman, she would look for creative ways in which to support local programs that help East Africans adjust to life in America. America is based on a tradition of welcoming people from other countries and helping them become part of America, Ms. Kilroy said. She has supported that tradition as Franklin County Commissioner and she will continue to support it as Congresswoman for the 15th Congressional district.

Ms. Kilroy said she believes there are some limited situations in which the U.S. Government has the right to listen in on calls between relatives overseas and Somali citizens of the United States. She pointed out that the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1973 requires judges to approve of warrants, which means that permission to wire tap would require probable cause. Therefore she disapproves of what the Bush administration is alleged to have done by listening in on conversations without such warrants.

In addition, Ms. Kilroy supports family reunification. She points out that her own family had to bring members to the U. S. after they originally emigrated from Europe, and she wants to ensure the fact that Somali families enjoy the same rights.

Ms. Kilroy would like to remind the Somali community that the issues she is fighting for, increasing jobs and lowering taxes, are important issues for Somali people. She says that she wishes to support working families, and as Somali people are family-oriented, she wants to work for them in Washington, the way she
has worked for them by developing educational programs in Franklin County.
Kilroy is endorsed by labor and professional groups that include Ohio AFL-CIO, AFSCME Ohio, and groups representing nurses, teachers, farmers, social workers, letter carriers, bricklayers, painters, carpenters, sheet metal workers, operating engineers and transportation workers.

She also is endorsed by the National Organization for Women, Emily’s List, and Planned Parenthood. Other supporters include the Sierra Club, Council for a Livable World, and J-Street PAC, which promotes meaningful American leadership to end the Arab_Israel and Palestine-Israel conflicts peacefully and diplomatically.
